UW Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full time (100% FTE, 40 hours per week), variable shift RESEARCH NURSE (Research Nurse 1). The Research Nurse will play a critical role in the study of COVID-19 transmission rates. The Research Nurse will spend their days out in the field, obtaining COVID-related data for a large-scale, multidisciplinary study.

The Research Nurse will serve in the Virology Division of Laboratory Medicine for statewide longitudinal SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) virologic and serologic surveys for Washington done in partnership with state and county-level public health authorities. We are actively collaborating with other groups to perform analysis of immunity, host and viral factors.

The Research Nurse will be supervised by the Research Coordinator and the Research Nurse Supervisor and work alongside para-medical staff such as phlebotomists and other survey collaborators. They will perform nursing services and investigative work in support of epidemiological, community-oriented research. This position will assess participant eligibility according to protocol. The research nurse will collect, prepare, and transport nasopharyngeal and blood specimens for this research program and provide qualitative survey data collection. Specimen and data collection will include approaching and interviewing participants in local communities and designated survey sites. Data collection and specimen transport will require the Research Nurse to travel within and between counties.

SCHEDULE
The Research Nurse will work 40 hours per week for a fixed-duration research assignment, anticipated to run for 6-8 months. The Research Nurse will regularly travel throughout King, Pierce, and Snohomish County.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Acquire research data alongside research project staff and public health collaborators; interview participants using electronic questionnaire
  • Collect specimens in diverse environments (e.g. households, mobile vehicles, pop-up sites) including travel to survey sites navigating using GPS and address information
  • Adhere to safety guidelines, including but not limited to, correctly donning and doffing personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensuring sterile specimen collection
  • Provide feedback and support to the research coordinator to develop protocols and processes on nursing aspects to include but not limited to specimen collection, participant interaction, and questionnaires
  • Collaborate and interact with external collaborators to include public agencies, private organizations, community liaisons and volunteers supporting the survey
  • Direct the work of support staff such as phlebotomists and clerical support personnel, scheduling assistants, laboratory couriers and other external collaborators to achieve research objectives
  • Adhere to the research protocol to enroll and assess eligibility of survey participants; obtain informed consent; coordinate referrals for additional services or follow-up care per protocol; provide relevant health education to participants, ensure compliance with research protocol of survey staff and external collaborators
  • Describe and clarify research protocol to participants; answer participant and community questions regarding the research; schedule subject participation and specimen collection;
  • Utilize electronic devices such as tablets to retrieve and input data; perform initial data quality control using electronic devices
  • Perform specialized tasks such as venipuncture, nasopharyngeal swabs and operation of electronic monitoring equipment to include but not limited to pulse oximeter and blood pressure cuffs; assist, process, and transport laboratory specimens as required;
  • Ensure return of results to participants per protocol
  • Collect data and produce timely reports on field data collection progress
  • Travel to and from multiple survey sites and other locations employed for survey logistics and management

    REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's Degree in nursing or a relevant field AND one year of experience as a registered nurse
  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Washington
  • Valid drivers license

    DESIRED
  • Language skills, especially fluency in Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese), Tagalog, Vietnamese, etc.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement regarding personal safety and the safety of others
  • Experience interviewing and collecting specimens in research settings, especially outside of a clinic environment
  • Experience interacting with and collecting specimens from pediatric populations
  • Experience working with diverse populations and settings
  • Professional communication skills in-person, via email, and over the telephone
  • Demonstrated ability to work and contribute as part of a team
  • Public health education experience

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • It will be necessary to work in other departmental and field locations in order to meet patient service requirements
  • Will be considered essential staff and as such will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather
  • Must be able to meet with all shifts on a regular basis
  • Travel estimated around 75%
  • Work different shifts to attain adequate response rates for the survey, including afternoons, evenings and weekend work
  • Must operate motor vehicle for travel to and from sites, transport of survey personnel, and transport specimens for processing and delivery to courier
  • Work outdoors in different seasons in hot and cold environments
  • Regular teleconference work and possible travel required to Seattle for meetings with research leadership team and collaborators
