Essential Functions
Primary responsibilities include partnering with design engineers and potential customers on major development projects, utilizing CAD/Design software and PLM systems to develop new designs or enhancements for products or system solutions. Secondary responsibilities include partnering with Production, Quality and Engineering functions to develop test fixtures and/or other equipment used in a production or test environment as well as helping improve quality, enhancing performance, and reducing cost. This position works independently by employing fundamental principles of mechanical, electrical, packaging, and other engineering disciplines. Consistently applies established engineering practices, standards, and documentation methods. Work assignments may include cross-functional or project team responsibilities (e.g. continuous improvement).
Develops assigned portions of design by analyzing product or equipment specifications, performance requirements, and existing manufacturing capability. Performs routine design and supports fabrication of new mechanical, electromechanical, or hydraulic components, subsystems, and systems by applying basic engineering principles and established analytical tools. May develop detailed designs by using sketches and descriptive transfer functions provided by others.
Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, backward compatibility, strength-weight efficiency, contractual specification requirements, cost-defining recommendations, and change proposals.
Prepares product or system layouts, detailed drawings, assembly drawings, and schematics through use of computer-aided design tools and following industry and/or military drawing standards. Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches and CAD designs in response to customer requests.
Reviews drawings and layouts to ensure clarity, completeness, form, fit, function, and conformity to standards, procedures, and specifications. Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and improvements to other engineers or designers.
Conducts routine analyses and/or tests pertaining to the development of new designs, methods, materials or processes and completes required documentation by applying basic engineering principles and company standards, and generating reports, procedures, or change proposals.
Provides technical information as input to product engineering planning by researching manufacturing or processing techniques, materials, properties, and process advantages and limitations.
Recommends changes to refine and enhance products for purposes of continuous improvement.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by keeping current with the sites preferred CAD and PLM software, attending educational workshops, reviewing technical publications, and/or participating in professional associations.The essential functions have been provided as examples of the type of work performed by employees assigned to this job classification. Qualifications
5+ year experience. Fundamental knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, concepts, and techniques. Knowledge of drawing practices; geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T); and use of computer-aided design and basic engineering analysis tools. May require fundamental understanding of fluid mechanics principles, kinematics, and stress analysis; materials selection and manufacturing methods. Ability to research and analyze data and develop recommendations to resolve problems. Ability to work with only minimal work direction and instructions regarding the scope of assignments; determine priority and order of assignments; and use considerable discretion in selecting procedures and techniques. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical journals and reports. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from team members, team leaders, customers, and regulatory agencies. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
