UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for the strategic planning, oversight, and delivery of IT services. Academic Services is a division of UW-IT that provides the core systems that support student services, promotes the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning, and works to enhance the accessibility of UW information and technology.

The Student Program is part of the Academic Services division of UW Information Technology.  The Director of Student Programs leads the student administrative systems group, and is responsible for developing and achieving agreed upon goals and outcomes for the portfolio of student administrative systems used at the UW.  The Director works closely with a variety of administrative and information systems professionals to improve alignment of student administration systems strategies across the UWs three campuses and Continuum College.  The Director is also part of the Academic Services leadership group, charged with developing IT strategies to meet the evolving needs of students and faculty at the UW.

The UW serves over 50,000 undergraduate and graduate students per year across its three campuses and, similarly, serves over 50,000 other students through the professional and continuing education programs of the UW Continuum College. Technology provided by the UW-IT Student Program provides a key role in helping these students achieve their academic goals at the UW. This technology portfolio requires strong leadership to best allocate project and operational investments amidst a changing technology, demographic, demand, and policy landscape. This position plays that leadership role, directing how to best use limited resources to provide the best possible experience for UW students and the professionals that serve them.

This position will build consensus, drive decisions within a diverse population of stakeholders, and successfully achieve the goals and outcomes defined for the student program.  The successful applicant must possess strong communication, negotiation and issue resolution skills to serve as a successful liaison between UW-IT and the campus community.


  • Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, Information Science, Computer Science, or related field or experience.
  • Six years experience in the following:
  • Experience and demonstrated success building partnerships that span organizational silos
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute multi-year strategic and operational plans
  • Experience leading organizational change in coordination with implementing technical improvements
  • Demonstrated ability and experience supervising staff and leading technical teams
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate complex program governance and decision making
  • Ability to effectively resolve escalated issues and risks, whether directly or working with program executive sponsors
  • Experience in managing projects in diverse subject areas with the ability to quickly "climb the learning curve" in new subject areas
  • Strong knowledge and experience in project and product lifecycle management
  • Knowledge of project management "best practices", group dynamics, team building and facilitation skills
  • Experience in extensive engagement of end users in the process of project management
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills; interaction abilities and demonstrated and committed to provide excellent customer service
  • Strong office and project organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to grasp technical concepts quickly and effectively

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.


  • Expert knowledge of student administration processes in higher education
  • Experience working in an institution of higher education
  • Experience with student information related applications
  • Knowledge of compliance and reporting requirements related to academic programs
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or training
  • Knowledge of ITIL
  • Experience with ERP replacement projects (especially with regards to student information systems)
  • Experience w/ vendor management and SaaS models for service delivery


    Responsibility to work varied hours as needed to meet deadlines and to accomplish work assignments on which others activities depend.  Daily leadership and oversite of team members, subject matter experts and stakeholders at all levels of the organization.  Expected to work overtime as necessary to accomplish scope of duties.
