Job Details

The Packaging Engineer is responsible to lead and support the packaging material development, testing, and specifications for the assigned customer applications and/or projects. This role will work with the commercial team, customers, procurement and operations to ensure that products have the optimized film specs and manufacturing processes to meet customer specifications and product requirements for new and existing applications. The Product Development Engineer will serve as the subject matter expert to provide directional recommendations in sourcing, development and qualification of new packaging suppliers.  Internally, this role will work closely with the operations, sourcing and commercial team to develop and lead projects to reduce the total costs in packaging redesign, through material substitution, lean process design and manufacturing process improvements. This role reports to the Regional Operations Director.

 

This is a remote, direct-hire opportunity. Candidates must be based in the U.S and willing to travel up to 50%. 

 

Primary Responsibilities:


Works with the Commercialization Manager and Sales to determine new programs film spec requirements for customers.  Assists with the costing of bid packages.
Champion all aspects of the trial process to ensure complete understanding of the customers’ needs, timely communication, and delivery as promised.
Provide ongoing engineering and technical support for customers during implementation of new business until fully commercialized.
Coordinates packaging performance and qualification testing (ship testing, material compatibility, line trials) coordinating with internal and external groups to validate packaging successfully passes performance criteria.
Works directly with the procurement team and across both technical and business teams to support projects such as supplier qualification, SKU consolidation, material substitution and operational simplification.
Provides technical input to sourcing, for the qualification of new packaging suppliers.
Develop and lead scoping exercises to identify proposed projects as well as to prioritize the projects in terms of feasibility, cost savings and technical resource requirements.
Manage strong relationships with vendors to identify improvement opportunities for packaging materials and equipment. Assist in driving improvements throughout supply chain.
Utilize advanced analytical skills with ability to identify cost variables, should-cost models and other tools to formulate recommendations based on understanding of material cost drivers, including expertise in Bill of Material cost structures at multiple volume tiers.
Reduce costs with improvements in packaging to reduce material costs and improve manufacturing converting processes.
Provide technical expertise to achieve resolution of quality and production issues through knowledge of the company's manufacturing methods.
Maintain packaging standards, specifications and best practices through proper documentation with a view toward ongoing tools and process improvements. Perform root-cause analysis and problem solving to issues with current packaging and good technical practices on new designs to ensure success the first time.
Creates technical data sheets.


 

Minimum Qualifications


B.S. degree in Packaging or Chemical Engineering or other related discipline
5+ years’ experience working in a packaging engineering role in flexible packaging films and converting
Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
Strong communication and problem-solving skills
Detail oriented, self-motivated, and able to work independently with minimal guidance
Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage a number of projects simultaneously.
Ability to work with cross functional groups, teams, and accommodate changing business priorities.
Ability to travel up to 50%
