The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine. The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology - Hematology and Coagulation Division has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time, day shift, MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST 2.


Hematology General Duties
  • Perform Hematological analysis using Sysmex XN instruments
  • Perform Hematological analysis such as differentials and smear scans using Cellavision and microscopes
  • Use SP-10s for slide making and staining or manually make and stain the slide.  Use Cytospin to make body fluid slides.
  • Use WAM 4.1.1 middleware to review Hematological results and conduct other checks prior to validation and submission of those results to the Lab Information System.
  • Perform Quantitative and Qualitative analysis body fluid cells using microscopes and counting chambers.
  • Be familiar with and able to use the Hematology Lab procedure manuals.
  • Perform ESRs using the Excyte 20
  • Medical Laboratory Scientists may be asked to perform other more specialized Hematology testing (Such as Assist with the acquisition and processing of Bone Marrow samples) and test development as needed and as they are specially trained and licensed.
  • Perform Maintenance procedures, daily, weekly and monthly, on Hematology instruments according to SOPs.
  • Run and evaluate Quality Controls on all procedures requiring the running of Quality Control material, according to SOPs
  • Perform testing on Proficiency testing materials when asked by the Hematology MLS Lead or by one of the MLS2s and in accordance with departmental SOPs.
  • Troubleshoot instrument issues, knowing when to call one of the groups that supports the Hematology lab like LabMed IT or Sysmexs TAC
  • Enter patient and Quality Control Data into the LIS.  Notify Reference Lab Services to fax results as needed and follow SOPs to fax results to outside locations when RLS is not available.
  • Involved in training and teaching MLS program students and new employees.
  • Be familiar with Departmental Environment of Care Policies, Work Place Safety Protocols, patient confidentiality policies, and all SOPs regarding departmental and divisional compliance and integrity in the workplace and CQI.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Assists with Provider acquisition of bone marrow aspirate and/or biopsy samples.
  • Processes bone marrow aspirate and biopsy samples, preparing them for transport to SCCA.
  • Distributes bone marrow aspirate and biopsy samples to Hematopathology and other locations for testing, further processing and evaluation.

    MLS 2 General Duties
    Maintain Operational Performance of the Hematology Lab
  • Review all Log books daily
  • Responsible for preparation for PM and Calibration and inter-instrument correlations after PM and Calibration
  • XN QC upload to Sysmex Insight, inputs new QC lots and evaluates data points for XN and Excyte20
  • Maintains message binder
  • Organizes Morph Review, Grand Rds and Rsrch Rds attendance and staff meeting coverage
  • Maps out weekly bench assignment schedule for Hematology MLS Lead review and approval
  • Schedules staff to perform CAP Surveys and enters Proficiency Testing results into the CAP website
  • Purchases reagents daily and orders supplies as needed and follows up on orders
  • Assists Hematology MLS Lead in sorting and entering Path, Tech and Fluid Reviews
  • Functions as a resource for staff and clinicians for the Bone Marrow Service
  • Functions as a resource for staff in absence of Hematology MLS Lead or when she is scheduled on a bench
  • Covers  MLS Lead duties in the absence of the Hematology MLS Lead

    Performs Project related Functions
  • Works with the Hematology MLS Lead on designing how various projects will advance, defining what needs to be done and whether staff will be involved in the project. 
  • Organizes staff involvement in certain of these projects
  • Organizes data from projects to present to the Hematology MLS Lead, Supervisor and Directors for their review
  • Organizes data from projects requiring review by outside regulatory organizations or for vendor review
  • Maps out new employee training for review and approval by Hematology MLS Lead.
  • Train current staff on new methods/instruments/procedures
  • Assists Supervisor in performing cost analysis of project proposals
  • Assists the Hematology MLS Lead in writing up procedures for new Methods and Instruments, that are related to an ongoing project or which are needed as a result of a successfully concluded project.

    Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory OR equivalent education/experience
    Current Medical Laboratory Scientist certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent certifying organization; or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division
    Two years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or equivalent experience

  • Excellent Customer Service and communication skills
  • Has experience with Sysmex, WAM middleware and CellaVision
  • Able to demonstrate skills in teaching and organization

    Conditions of Employment:
    It will be necessary to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, especially at Harborview Medical Center.  In addition, less frequent work effort will be required at other UW School of Medicine locations (e.g., South Lake Union) and Seattle-area healthcare institutions.

  • Will be considered essential staff and as such will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather.
  • Will be required to work some weekends and holidays

    UW Medicine includes Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center - Montlake, UW Medical Center - Northwest, Valley Medical Center, UW Neighborhood Clinics, UW Physicians, UW School of Medicine, and Airlift Northwest.
