Harborview Medical Center's Mental Health and Addiction Services has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time MENTAL HEALTH PRACTITIONER. Under general supervision, the Mental Health Practitioner provides psychiatric assessments in hospital emergency rooms or community settings. This position also provides community contact to those patients who are suspected to be in need of psychiatric assessment due to evidence of reported risk by persons in their support system. This position provides community outreach support to all the Recovery Case management teams in the clinic.

This position is responsible for implementing the goals of the program, which are to promote community stability of patients by engagement in mental health services and treatment planning as well as assistance in securing and maintaining housing, benefits and culturally relevant treatment to meet their needs, and to assist patients in developing meaningful and productive activities. The Mental Health Practitioner will be expected to be able to work with a wide variety of patients.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • As part of a multidisciplinary treatment team, work with patients and their social networks to assist in their recovery from mental illness
  • Assess patient needs and determine interventions
  • May assist clients obtaining housing and funding as necessary to prevent inappropriate use of crisis services
  • Facilitate diversion from voluntary and involuntary psychiatric hospitalization when clinically appropriate
  • Participate in case reviews as appropriate
  • Chart patient contact in the medical record in a timely manner per policy
  • Collect data for evaluation and quality improvement as assigned
  • Assess crises and determine interventions
  • Coordinate medication services with teams medical staff
  • Lead or co-lead groups as assigned
  • Assist in the development and planning of groups relevant to the needs of clients
  • Prepare information requested by outside agencies such as DSHS, Social Security Administration, and Seattle Housing Authority
  • Provide consultation on ethnic minority population to clinical staff
  • Provide coverage for other team members as assigned
  • Participate in community program planning
  • Maintain required daily entries in computer log
  • Complete payroll documentation/leave requests in timely manner
  • Participate in HMC Disaster Drills and required HMC training and orientation
  • Provide consultation to referring practitioners and other members of treatment community as needed to assure continuity of care for program clients
  • Assure regulations related to client confidentiality are maintained
  • Assure regulations related to monitoring clients who are on a Least Restrictive Order are maintained
  • Participate in individual or group supervision as negotiated with supervisor/manager
  • Participate in HMC ongoing educational opportunities as appropriate
  • Maintain appropriate State of Washington license or registration
  • Obtain training and education relevant to the needs of program and populations served
  • Obtain continuing education to stay current with trends in mental health, regulations and other pertinent information
  • Testify in judicial proceedings in response to subpoenas
  • Perform other duties as assigned

    REQUIREMENTS:
    A Master's Degree in behavioral sciences, such as psychology, psychiatric nursing, occupational therapy, vocational or educational counseling, or social work OR Bachelor's Degree in nursing or a behavioral science AND three years' of experience in the direct delivery of professional mental health care.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/ registration.

    LEGAL REQUIREMENT:
    Department of Health certification as a Chemical Dependency Professional or Registered Counselor in a Chemical Dependency Trainee status.
