Job Description Summary

Adjunct faculty members must be responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in a classroom environment to students with a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences.


Major responsibilities consist of didactic and clinical instruction of nurse aide students. This will include practice clinical settings and student clinical rotations. Courses are taught at the Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, and Norfolk Campuses, with clinical rotations at affiliated long term care facilities. All faculty members must be skilled in oral and written communication and must be able to work cooperatively with other staff members.

Required Qualifications

Must be a registered nurse or a licensed practical nurse who holds a current, unrestricted license in Virginia or a multistate licensure privilege.

Must have a minimum of five years of nursing patient care experience.

Preferred Qualifications

A registered nurse who has two years of experience within the previous five years and at least one year of experience in the provision of long-term care facility services; experience teaching in a nurse aide education program; supervision of nursing students in a nursing facility or unit, geriatrics department, chronic care hospital, home care, or other long-term care setting.

Bachelor’s degree in nursing. Experience in curriculum development in nursing education in a higher education environment. Basic understanding of, and experience with, strategies that promote student retention and student success at the community college level. Candidates should possess sufficient technology skills to work productively in an organization that utilizes significant information and instructional technology resources.
