Position description
Mayo Clinic Cardiovascular Surgery provides quality care for complex, serious and rare conditions. Our PA and NP staff work collaboratively with cardiac and thoracic surgeons in a team-based model (3 APPs for every 2 Surgeons).
In addition to being a first assist in the OR, PA and NP staff provide care for these complex surgical patients via inpatient care in critical care, telemetry and med/surg areas. Thoracic first assisting in minimally invasive video and robotic surgical cases and complex open thoracic and foregut surgery are performed. We also treat numerous and sometimes rare conditions such as diaphragm disorders, mediastinal mass, lung and esophageal cancer, pectus excavatum, thoracic outlet syndrome, esophageal and diaphragmatic hernia repairs.
  • Spends at least 50% of days based at the hospital (rounds, service, or shift work)
  • Performs specialized procedure(s)
  • Provides evals and consults with indirect supervision at least 50% of days worked
  • Spends at least 10% of days as First Assist in surgery
  • Takes call assignments (Primary and/or ED)
  • Provides Weekend/Holiday Service
  • General, Cardiac, Trauma, or Surgical sub specialty
  • Robotic training preferred not required.
  • ER, inpatient, outpatient and surgical call.
  • Procurement call for donor heart recovery.


Qualifications
New Grads will not be considered at this time.

Acute Care Nurse Practitioner:
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited university.
  • Master of Science in Nursing required.
  • Must be licensed or eligible to practice as an CNP in the State of Arizona. Must have national certification.
  • RNFA - First Assist is required.

Physician Assistant:
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited university.
  • NCCPA certification required.
  • Must be licensed/certified or eligible to practice as PA in the State of Arizona.


Additional qualifications
Surgical first assist, bedside talc, chest tube removal/insertion, Temporary pacing wire removal. TPA/Dornase chest tube administration. ER, inpatient, outpatient and surgical call. Thoracic or cardiac surgery experience preferred. Training or experience in general, trauma, or surgical subspecialty also preferred. Robot-assisted surgery preferred.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Flexibility to adjust schedule to meet patient and staff needs.
  • Ability to manage time and stress effectively and adapt to unpredictable situations within the patient care setting.
  • Two to five years of clinical experience preferred.
  • Primary care, acute care, and/or surgical experience preferred.
  • Strong computer skills in an Electronic Medical Record preferred.


License or certification
  • Must be certified by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Must be licensed or eligible to practice as an CNP in the State of Arizona. Must have national certification.
  • Maintains prescribing and dispensing privileges in Arizona.
  • Must provide evidence of application for DEA certificate upon hire, obtain DEA certificate within 90 days of hire, and maintain certificate thereafter unless waived by department/division.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required upon hire and must be valid for 90 days or greater from start date. Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.
  • Maintains ACLS and PALS certification as required by specific department or division.

Facility is 24/7; staff will work nights and weekends on a regular basis.
